One of our three main initiatives at She’s Somebody’s Daughter is our Community initiative. In Community we provide an ongoing, relational support system for women affected by sexual exploitation.
Leaving exploitation is truly a journey of healing.
Studies show that 85-99% of women in the commercial sex industry suffered childhood sexual abuse, and 68-75% have been raped while in the industry. 60% suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder at the same level of those who have fought in combat and 90% deal with substance abuse, very often at the hands of their exploiter or as a coping mechanism for what they endure in the industry.
Leaving commercial sexual exploitation for a new life begins with the step of choosing to do so, but that is simply the beginning of a long-term journey of healing. Finding a new job is obviously a piece of that journey, but the emotional and physical trauma must also be addressed in order for the journey to continue sustainably.
We are so privileged to walk out this journey with amazing women who inspire and bring joy to our lives. The journey itself is worth a celebration.
